IBM ships fastest PowerPC 604 processor

PowerPC 604 Runs at 166 and 180 MHz

April 29, 1996

Fishkill, New York -- IBM today announced general availability of its fastest PowerPC 604 microprocessors, running at 166 and 180 megahertz (MHz). Also today, Power Computing of Round Rock, Texas, introduced the first family of personal computers incorporating these faster PowerPC microprocessors.

"The new PowerPC 604s demonstrate IBM's commitment to drive PowerPC technology forward and provide customers with faster and more powerful microprocessors," said Fred Sporck, director of PowerPC products, IBM Microelectronics. "These new solutions demonstrate why PowerPC is the leading RISC platform."

In joining IBM's other PowerPC 604 microprocessors, the new versions of the PowerPC 604 comprise one of the most robust product lines in the 32-bit microprocessor realm.

"The new PowerPC 604 speeds from IBM enable us to deliver even faster Mac OS personal computers. Our PowerTower is setting new standards for innovation, power and affordability," said Steve Kahng, president and CEO of Power Computing.

The new PowerPC 604 at 180 MHz has an estimated SPECint95 of 5.7-6.2*, depending on system configuration. This estimate is a 20 percent SPECint95 performance increase over the PowerPC 604 at 150 MHz and a 300 percent improvement in SPECint95 performance over the first PowerPC microprocessor for Apple systems.

In quantities of 1,000, the PowerPC 604 microprocessor at 166 MHz is priced at $499 and the 180 MHz is $693 and is shipping in volume. Other PowerPC 604 microprocessors now shipping include 100, 120, 133 and 150-MHz versions.

IBM Microelectronics is a merchant market supplier that offers an extensive portfolio of products, ranging from semiconductor design and fabrication to complete and fully tested functional assemblies.

Editors' Notes: * Performance depends upon processor clock and bus speed ratio and L2 subsystem size and speed. The SPECint95 estimate of 6.2 is based on a system with an 180 MHz PowerPC 604, a 60 MHz system bus and 1 Megabyte of L2 cache memory. Pricing is current as of April 29, 1996 and is subject to change without notice.
